Letter from Larry

CONTACT TURKEY TODAY:

Turkey is currently in hot and heavy negotiations with the US Administration over the use of Turkish territory for a "northern front" against Iraq. Thanks to Floyd Rudman, here is contact information for Turkey. Please contact them and ask them to refuse the use of their territory for a war against Iraq. -------------------------------------------

[Greetings. I have been able to find one member of the Turkish Parliament who has an english language web site. Huseyin Celyk represents a district in eastern Turkey. The Turkish Parliament votes tomorrow on whether to help the United States invade Iraq. The Turkish government has already agreed; the parliament is the only organ that stands in the way. For those who wish to write to Dr. Celyk, here is his address. Also below is a statement he posted on his website. Erick Williams]

(2) UN Security Council. The US and UK and Spain Monday introduced their war resolution to the Security Council. It is crucial at this time to contact all the permanent (France, Russia, China + US and UK)) and non-permanent (Bulgaria, Cameroon, Guinea, Mexico, Syria, Angola, Chile, Germany, Pakistan, Spain) members of the UN Security Council and ask them not to support a war against Iraq. Receiving a thousand phone calls (this message goes to several thousand) would send a clear message of non-support from the American people, and help the SC members resist the overtures and bribes of the US administration. The appropriate contact information is in the last item. To pass a resolution, the SC must generate nine "yes" votes and no vetoes. Right now, the chances for approval of this resolution appear slim, but we must continue our pressure. A single event, such as Iraq's refusal to destroy their missiles, might change the balance.

In particular, please contact France, Russia, China and Germany and ask them to continue to oppose the Iraq war. Also contact Guinea, which will assume the chair of the SC on March 1. Thus far, Guinea has opposed the war.

For your convenience, here are the UNSC email addresses which I have available, so that you may cut and paste them in a message:

Also email <president@whitehouse.gov> the administration EVERY DAY to express your opposition to the Iraq war. We can and must prevail.

"We should ask ourselves why we have failed to persuade more of the world that a war with Iraq is necessary. We have over the past two years done too much to assert to our world partners that narrow and mercenary U.S. interests override the cherished values of our partners....Even where our aims were not in question, our consistency is at issue. The model of Afghanistan is little comfort to allies wondering on what basis we plan to rebuild the Middle East, and in whose image and interests....No one of my colleagues is comfortable with our policy. Everyone is moving ahead with it as good and loyal. The State Department is loaded with people who want to play the team game - we have a very strong premium on loyalty." -- recently resigned career diplomat John Brady Kiesling
